WAMPO primarily plays an advisory role in transit related issues. WAMPO aids transit and paratransit in planning, understanding transportation issues, deciphering federal regulations, and project management through the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) process.
Transit can be broken into two main areas, fixed route and paratransit. The following explains the difference between the two types.
Fixed Routes
Fixed routes is the type of transit system that most people recognize. In this system, buses or rail run on designated or fixed routes. Wichita Transit is the primary fixed route provider in the WAMPO region.
Paratransit
Paratransit transportation is usually an on-demand service. The customer designates the pick up and drop off points, as well as schedules the time. Paratransit is beneficial for elderly and handicapped people who may not be able to use fixed routes services.
There are numerous paratransit operators in the Wichita area. Fortunately, paratransit providers have organized a forum to share ideas among each other. The organization is called the Coordinated Transit District-12, also known as
CTD-12.
