Transportation Planning Manager
The Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is seeking an experienced, progressive professional to serve as Transportation Planning Manager. This division head oversees a staff of six and is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the WAMPO as it implements its Metropolitan Transportation Plan and Unified Planning Work Program.
Located in South Central Kansas along the Arkansas River and near Kansas’s Flint Hills, the WAMPO region is home to over 500,000 residents. Wichita, the largest city in Kansas, is the population and employment center of the region. The region offers a high quality of life with very favorable housing costs, low congestion and the availability of the recreational, educational, shopping, and entertainment opportunities found in any metropolitan area.
The region labels itself the Air Capital of the World due to the cluster of aircraft manufacturers located here. It is the medical services and retail center of a larger region. It experienced moderate but steady growth from 2000 to 2010 and the WAMPO’s boundaries are likely to expand in the near future.
The WAMPO has been in transition and is now poised to become the exceptional organization that it has been striving to become. The Transportation Planning Manager will be expected to help continue current momentum and to help WAMPO reach the next level of organizational development.
WAMPO staff is housed in the Wichita-Sedgwick County Metropolitan Area Planning Department (MAPD) and operates under the administrative umbrella of the City of Wichita.
The position requires a person with a high level of commitment to meeting professional challenges and achieving results as the WAMPO continues to improve its operations. Ideal candidates should possess the ability to be a leader while serving a forward-looking, results-oriented Transportation Policy Body. Candidates should possess strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to foster political relationships. WAMPO is looking for a candidate with critical thinking skills who is also solution-oriented. Candidates need the ability to provide an analytical approach to problem solving and work plans. A thorough understanding of the legislative requirements surrounding metropolitan planning organizations is a must.
This position requires a master's degree in planning and four years of planning experience of which two years shall be administrative and supervisory experience in the field of planning. Advanced degrees in architecture, civil engineering, geography, urban studies, public administration, law, economics and similar areas with ties to urban or regional planning may be considered.
